Saving Money With Unfinished Kitchen Cabinets

Have you priced new kitchen cabinets lately? Are you sitting down? If you're looking to buy high-end cabinetry, it may well cost more than you paid for your entire house. Kind of mind-boggling, isn't it, and really cost-prohibitive to most homeowners. Even moderately-priced cabinets can cost $10,000 to $20,000 depending on how many you need. You're probably wondering about now how you can replace your cabinets without paying so much money, and one answer is to buy unfinished kitchen cabinets. You can save a bundle by doing all the finishing work yourself, and it isn't as difficult as you think it is to have beautiful results.

As hard as it may be to believe, it's possible to purchase solid wood, custom made cabinets for your kitchen that will be delivered in ready-to-finish condition. With a few basic tools, such as foam brushes, rags, steel wool, and sandpaper, you'll be able to put a hard finish on your cabinets that will look professionally done and last for years. Finishing the cabinets before they're hanging on the wall is a much easier job than it is to than it is to finish them when they're already up. It's simply a matter of staining the cabinets (probably two coats), wiping off the stain, letting it dry thoroughly, and applying several coats of varnish leaving drying time in between coats. With a little smoothing after each coat,  because applying wet products raises the grain in most woods, you can have the beautiful cabinets you've dreamed of.

Unfinished cabinets come in many styles and varieties of wood. If you want to finish your kitchen traditionally,  or in country, contemporary, Provencal, Shaker, Mission, or other styles, you will be able to find unfinished kitchen cabinets that will fit into your kitchen like a glove. The companies that sell the cabinets will also offer to sell you the supplies to finish the cabinets with, but most likely you'll have to pay more for them there than you would for something at a local home improvement or paint store. You can even find name brand stains and varnishes at discount stores, like Walmart and Target, that will enable you to do a fine job of finishing your cabinets.

If you have more time than money, and you'd still like to have quality cabinets for your kitchen, you may be able to afford unfinished kitchen cabinets. It will probably take you several weekends to finish and install your cabinets, but the results will more than make up for the time spent, and doing the work yourself will mean money in your pocket.
